Samsung to Discontinue DeX App for Windows with One UI 7 Update
Samsung has officially announced that the DeX for Windows app will no longer be supported following the release of its One UI 7 update. This marks a significant shift for users who have relied on the app to create a desktop-like environment by connecting their Galaxy smartphones to Windows PCs. The change is expected to roll out in early 2025, likely alongside the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S25 series.
Why the Change?
Samsung recommends users transition to Microsoft’s Phone Link (also called Link to Windows) for seamless PC and phone integration. This app, developed in collaboration with Microsoft, offers features such as:
- Syncing notifications, calls, and text messages.
- Running Android apps directly on Windows 11.
- Managing media playback from the PC.
While Phone Link provides robust connectivity options, it does not replicate the full DeX desktop environment experience, which allowed for drag-and-drop file transfers and a true PC-like interface.
DeX Isn’t Going Away Completely
It’s important to note that this discontinuation only affects the DeX app for Windows. The core DeX functionality will remain intact. Users can still connect their Galaxy devices to external displays, such as TVs, monitors, and devices like the NextDock, to enjoy the DeX experience using peripherals like keyboards and mice.
What’s Next?
One UI 7, anticipated to debut in beta later this month, brings a host of new features, including smoother animations, a redesigned Quick Panel, and AI-powered tools. For users lamenting the loss of the DeX PC app, Samsung’s deeper integration with Microsoft suggests an ongoing focus on enhancing cross-device productivity, albeit through alternative means.
If you’re a long-time DeX for Windows user, now might be the time to explore Phone Link or adapt your workflow to external DeX displays.
